Maas Brothers department stores, a Florida fixture for more than 100 years before closing in 1991, is celebrated with an exhibit at Florida International Museum. The tradition of teethers and rattles for babies is as old as humankind. During the Enlightenment and particularly in the nineteenth century, as the child had a more honored place in society, the variety and types of rattles increased in Europe and the United States. This exhibition contains a variety of rattles from a period of approximately three hundred years and in a range of materials, including gold, silver, tin, ivory, coral, and crystal. This exhibition displays works by the twentieth-century French photographer Robert Doisneau. It consists of a portfolio of fifteen photographic prints by this famous photographer, which have rarely been displayed as a group. The exhibition covers the period from the late 1960s onward. These playful sculptures took their point of departure in found objects, which were cast in bronze and later painted bright colors.
