From the earliest period of photographic history in the 1840s, the portrait could be viewed as photography's reason for being. By the nineteenth-century's close, practitioners of the medium asserted its artfulness with landscapes and posed tableaux, but engaging portraits continued to flourish, deriving from both photography's commercial and artistic side. Famous people faced the photographer's camera not only for their family and friends, but also for history, posterity, and adoring admirers. This exhibition contains such portraits as the writer George Sand by Nadar, physicist Albert Einstein by Philippe Halsmann, poet Ezra Pound by Richard Avedon, and film star Gloria Swanson by Edward Steichen. The exhibition covers forty years of printmaking by one of the best-known American artists working today.
