Salvador Dali Museum: Urchin Searchin'

Dare to look through a sea urchin telescope as local artist Diane Gugliotta plumbs Dali's secrets of magic craftsmanship. Discover the sea urchin slumber and learn why Dali advised, "Painter, take my advice to keep ever beside your easel or somewhere close to your work a sea urchin's skeleton. Kids and families can experiment with urchin-based watercolor and collage, and Gugliotta will be on hand to offer practical and Dalinian hints for your own artwork. 5th Annual Veteran's Day Boat Parade

The Madeira Beach American Legion Post #273 and the Madeira Beach Elks Lodge #1912 will host the 5th Annual Veteran’s Day Boat Parade, which will be a salute to veterans, a tribute of remembrance for the events on September 11th and will show support for those serving in the military. More than 100 boats are expected to participate in the flotilla. The marshalling of boats will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Elks Lagoon, one mile south of Madeira Beach Causeway, and will proceed through the Intracoastal Waterway. Good spots for viewing the parade include John's Pass, American Legion Post 273 in Madeira Beach, Elks Lodge 1912 in Madeira Beach and the channel between Isle of Palms and Isle of Capri in Treasure Island. 5th Annual Pinellas Recycles Day

The event celebrates the innovative and creative ways that individuals and businesses reuse or recycle objects to turn them into useful household items or works of art. Telescope Viewing at Science Center

The Science Center will offer free telescope viewing for the public from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Planetarium presentations will be offered throughout the evening at $1 per person. Fragments: Portraits of Survivors

The indomitable spirits of 120 St. Petersburg/Clearwater area Holocaust survivors have been encapsulated within photographs reflecting upon fragments of theirs pasts for future generations. Toronto freelance photographer Jason Schwartz captured the expressions of memories of Holocaust survivors for this exhibit at the Florida Holocaust Museum. U2: The Spy Plane at the Florida International Museum

The Florida International Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, features this collection of historical and personal artifacts associated with the U-2 incident of May 1960 in which Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while flying for the CIA in a U-2 spy plane. These artifacts are on loan from the Cold War Museum and Francis Gary Powers, Jr. and include a piece of Powers’ U-2 plane, personal correspondence from prison, and items associated with the U-2 program. The U-2 Incident exhibit has been displayed internationally and this showing will commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Power’s release from prison, which took place on February 10, 1962. The museum also features an exhibit on the Cuban Missle Crisis and a permanent collection of John F. Kennedy memorabilia. For more information, call 727-822-3693.

When The Cold War Got Hot at the Florida International Museum
