From the earliest period of photographic history in the 1840s, the portrait could be viewed as photography's reason for being. By the nineteenth-century's close, practitioners of the medium asserted its artfulness with landscapes and posed tableaux, but engaging portraits continued to flourish, deriving from both photography's commercial and artistic side. Famous people faced the photographer's camera not only for their family and friends, but also for history, posterity, and adoring admirers. The exhibition covers forty years of printmaking by one of the best-known American artists working today. Red Grooms grew up in Nashville and moved first to Chicago and then to New York, where he found the vitality of the city and the diversity of lifestyles to be an inspiration for his prints. A selection of 110 wall pieces and 15 pedestal pieces drawn from the private collection of Walter G.
