Currently there are more than 200 palms and cycades exhibited representing some 45 species from around the world. Development of the arboretum is a continuing, never-ending project. In February 1924, the Granada Terrace subdivision was platted by prominent local developer C. Perry Snell and laid out with parkways, circular plazas in the roadway, and curved streets. This small, compact neighborhood was oriented towards these parkways and plazas which feature large concrete monuments. The southern portion of the neighborhood is bisected by Granada Park, the central parkway comprised of a series of rounded plots that runs from 1st Street NE to the water, ending on the east side of Coffee Pot Boulevard and opening into a large, semi-circular vista. Features within the vista include a large, rectangular, concrete pylon pergola and benches on the west side of Coffee Pot Boulevard, the street that parallels the waterfront. A corresponding semi-circular feature and a wide concrete terrace with steps to water's edge dominate its extension into Coffee Pot Bayou on the east side of the boulevard.

Jackass Key National Wildlife Sanctuary

Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1922 as breeding grounds for colonial bird species. The refuge consists of Indian key, Tarpon Key, Little Bird Key, Jackass Key, and Mule Key. All the mangrove islands of Pinellas NWR are within the St. Petersburg city limits, and provide loafing and feeding sites for brown pelicans, cormorants, anhingas, night herons, egrets, ibis, willet, and spoonbills. Weedon Island Preserve combines a wonderful nature experience on a site with fascinating historical significance. The Cultural and Natural Histor Center features classrooms and exhibit areas designed by anthropologists, historians and Native Americans to reflect the art and history of the area’s first people. Weedon Island Preserve is a group of low-lying islands in north St. Petersburg whose history goes back 10,000 years when early peoples such as the Timucuans and Manasotas made the island their home. The center combines a look at artifacts excavated from the site by the Smithsonian in the 1940s, as well as the chance to experience aspects of Native American culture including dance, cooking, art, crafts and more. The preserve also includes a nature experience with a 4-mile canoe trail and 9-mile hiking trail along with a fishing pier and waterfront picnic sites.
