  • Emergency Information: Police, fire, and medical can be reached by dialing 911 on any telephone (no coin is required from payphone). Many hotels/motels have physicians on call. Also, a number of walk-in medical clinics have been established which offer fully licensed doctors and accept most major credit cards.
  • Currency Exchange, Telegraph and Facsimile: Tampa International Airport provides 7a.m. - 7p.m., 7 days a week currency exchange and the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport provides Canadian currency exchange. Most area hotels can assist you with domestic or international facsimile transmission and telegraph service. For information on telegrams, call Western Union 1-800-325-6000.
  • The Local Area: Local residents are famous for their hospitality and friendly attitude. Feel free to seek their advice. Most major resorts and many smaller properties offer staff fluent in several languages. Dress throughout the area, including attractions and restaurants, is resort casual attire.
  • Rules of the Road: International visitors must remember to drive on the right side of the road. Speed Limits: The speed limit on residential streets is 25 mph. On thoroughfares, the limit ranges from 35 to 55 mph. Interstate highways are usually 55 mph in highly populated areas and 65 mph in rural areas. School zones are 15 mph. Driving Age: 16 years of age with a valid driver's license. Insurance: Drivers must have auto insurance (especially Personal Liability Insurance) to drive a vehicle. Seat Belts: All front seat passengers must wear seat belts. Children under 3 must be in an approved car seat; most rental companies can provide one. Driving and Drinking: Florida law provides stiff penalties for driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Most local nightclubs offer complimentary service back to the hotel or will call you a taxi. Traffic Signs: Generally, rectangular green signs provide directions and information; yellow signs indicate safety information; white signs give speed limits and other operational information. Also, unless expressly forbidden, you may turn right on a red light after stopping and checking for oncoming traffic. Wet Roads: It is a law in Florida that auto vehicles must operate with their headlights on when it is raining hard enough to use windshield wipers.
