Dunedin

   Dunedin reflects the rich American and Scottish heritage of its founding fathers. This charming village-like town of 35,234 features natural wooded and subtropical settings, 3_ miles of picturesque waterfront and a relaxed lifestyle. It was recently named one of the five most walkable downtowns in America by Walking Magazine.

   Located in Dunedin, the unspoiled refuges of Caladesi and Honeymoon Island parks are ideal areas for swimming, shelling, fishing, picnics and nature study. Caladesi Island is one of the last remaining undisturbed barrier islands on the Gulf Coast and was named the sixth best beach in the United States by a 1999 national study. The islands are also refuges to several rare and endangered birds.

   Perhaps one of the most unique recreational features in Dunedin is the Pinellas Trail, a 15-foot wide linear park running 47 miles through the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area in an abandoned railroad right-of-way. The recreational trail is ideal for walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading or exploring nature. Dunedin's 4.2 miles of trail winds through the heart of downtown.

   The first land deed was recorded in 1852 by Richard L. Garrison only seven years after Florida became a state. A petition in 1882 by two Scottish merchants. J.O. Douglas and James Somerville, officially named the Post Office, then the town itself. Dunedin. The town became incorporated in 1899, and a city in 1925. Dunedin was a major citrus producing area and the birthplace of the citrus concentrate industry. It was the first home of the prestigious PGA (Professional Golfers Association) and is currently home to the A.C. Nielsen Company, responsible for the Nielsen ratings. Today, the citrus business has all but disappeared, but the community's Scottish heritage is kept alive with the annual Highland Games and other festivals.
