Home About the Area View ipix Palm Harbor Palm Harbor was supposed to be one of the original towns in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, but it is a town in name only. In the 1880s the area was plotted for a city to be named Sutherland. The area changed its name to Palm Harbor in 1925, but the depression kept it from developing into a city and it was never incorporated. However, it is a thriving community with more than 65,000 residents and great natural beauty. A popular area in Palm Harbor is John Chestnut Park on the shore of Lake Tarpon. The park features nature trials, canoe trails and a boat ramp. Ranked as one of the Top 10 bass waters, Lake Tarpon is a popular fishing spot for visitors and residents alike. Today Palm Harbor thrives on its small-town friendliness. Much of the old downtown has been preserved and many historical items are featured in the area's historical museum. Palm Harbor hosts three fine arts, crafts and music festivals annually: Palm Harbor Day in May, The Palm Harbor Arts, Crafts & Music Festival held the first week in December and the Downtown Merchants Arts, Crafts and Music Festival in February.
