Home About the Area View ipix Safety Harbor Nestled on Old Tampa Bay, Safety Harbor's written history dates to the 1500s when Hernando de Soto discovered five mineral springs near a large Tocobaga Indian village in the area. The Indians believed the springs had healing qualities, a legend that persists today. Water from those springs is used today throughout the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa. The city also includes a small Historical Museum on the site of several remaining Native American shell mounds. The museum features artifacts from the area dating back some 10,000 years. Safety Harbor was first homesteaded by Count Odet Philippe, a French surgeon in Napoleon's navy, who is credited with introducing citrus growing to Florida. Established in 1823 the Count's homestead is now the site of Philippe Park, a tree-lined 122-acre setting on Old Tampa Bay. A sizable ceremonial mound from the ancient Indian settlement exists in the park today. The past comes to life in the quaint village atmosphere of Safety Harbor's Main Street. Visitors can canoe, kayak or sail along Old Tampa Bay possibly seeing an endangered Florida manatee. Incorporated as a city in 1917, Safety Harbor has maintained its family oriented community while preserving its environmentally sensitive lands and revitalizing its historic downtown business district.
