On Nov. 10, the world's greatest athletes will again convene in beautiful Clearwater to determine the best of the best at the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3.
The city hosted the inaugural triathalon event on a picture perfect day last year and preparations are already in place for an even better event in 2007. The event consists of a challenging 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run.
There are more than 25 events that serve as qualifiers for the championship, including 70.3 competitions in Brazil, Denmark, and Monaco. Each event in the series includes professional and age group qualifying spots.
"Clearwater proved to be the perfect venue for the inaugural Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3. More than 1,600 athletes and 5,000 spectators from around the world saw Clearwater's beautiful beaches and experienced its' friendly hospitality," said Blair LaHaye, Director of Communications for Ironman. This event is open to the public and is a thrilling competition to watch.
The event will be hosted at the nearby Harborview Center in downtown Clearwater. The start and finish of all events will be at Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach. The Harborview Center will host several of the pre- and post-race activities, including athlete check-in. Banquet functions will take place at Sand Key Park. A professional prize purse of $100,000 will be offered and top professional and age group athletes will qualify for the 2008 Ironman World Championship 70.3.
