With the unfurling and parading of a 900-foot rainbow flag, St. Petersburgs Grand Central District will come to life on June 24 as the St. Pete Pride Festival celebrates arts, history and culture of the gay community.
Pride in Paradise is the culmination of a month-long slate of events that includes community outreach parties, an antique car show, cultural exhibitions and art auctions. It is the fourth annual event, with participation already having more than doubled by last year from the inaugural event in 2003.
Related activities throughout June this year include Pride-themed theater and baseball gatherings at American Stage and Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, and a sponsors reception called A Taste of Pride.
An estimated 35,000 people attended St. Pete Pride Festival in 2005, and organizers say their event is destined to become one of the largest Pride celebrations in the Southeastern United States.
