It was in early 2004 that the phenomena landed in St. Petersburg. An event called Chihuly Across Florida: Masterworks in Glass debuted at the Museum of Fine Arts, and eventually was seen by more than 250,000 museum visitors.
Dale Chihuly, a glass artist of worldwide renown, had made a major impact on the Floridas Beach area. Turns out it was just the beginning.
Scheduled for opening in early 2008 is the Dale Chihuly Gallery at the Arts Center. It is the first permanent gallery of work by the Seattle-based artist. It is to encompass 6,000 square feet of space, adjacent to the proposed 62,000 square feet for the Arts Center, which is a non-profit educational facility and gallery.
Adjoining the collection, The Art Center's "Glass House" will be a demonstration workshop. It is to feature stadium seating, where 100 visitors can watch master artists create glassworks, and an extensive education program for aspiring glass artisans.
"Dale will be working in tandem with the Arts Center to design the space," Chihuly publicist Janet Makela told the St. Petersburg Times when the project was announced in August, 2005. "That will enable him to be hands-on in the crafting of the galleries and to visualize the art he'll create for them."
