Celebrating the charming, hideaway town of Safety Harbor along the north shores of Tampa Bay, the city's May Days event, is a collection of small-town gatherings with big-time appeal.
Formerly called Heritage Weekend, the event attracts interests both athletic and aesthetic, and more.
The Safety Harbor Sprints featuring 5K and one-mile runs depart from the city's Marina on Saturday morning. On Sunday along Main Street, the Arts and Crafts Festival features paintings, jewelry and other works from more than 200 artists, from the area and beyond.
Also on the schedule is a "Movie at the Marina" get-together on Friday evening, and return of the "Taste of Safety Harbor" food festival, on Saturday. Mix in the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast on Sunday morning and you have a non-stop series of happenings.
The streets of downtown Safety Harbor and the gazebo at John Wilson Park are as much the stars of the show as the events. With palm-lined streets, a canopy of trees and brick-outlined charm, they provide a backdrop worthy of a picture on a postcard.
